FlagSphere — political map of the world on an interactive globe

FlagSphere is an interactive political map of the world on a 3D globe. Spin the Earth, zoom into any country and open its card: capital, largest cities, flag, coat of arms, population, area, languages, currency, GDP and time zone. Free, no sign-up, right in the browser.

What is on the map

A political map: 236 countries and dependent territories, each in its own colour, with national borders and coastlines. Neighbouring countries never share a colour.

Capitals (241) and the largest cities of every country (806 in total), with population and the year of the estimate. The cities layer is switched on in settings: capitals are always visible, other cities appear as you zoom in.

Oceans and seas, labelled, with the boundaries between them; land relief and ocean depth from ETOPO 2022: mountains, plains, continental shelves and ocean trenches.

Disputed areas

The map shows 25 disputed areas. We show them neutrally — hatched, with a dashed border — and the card says who controls the area and who claims it. This is not a position on the dispute but a description of the situation on the ground.

Country card

Flag and coat of arms, capital, population, area, official languages, currency, GDP and GDP per capita, time zones, largest cities. Every country also has its own page in three languages, easy to link to or find in search.

Who it is for

School students and geography teachers, anyone who wants to understand the political map of the world, and travellers. Interface languages: English, Russian, Kazakh.

Data and sources

Open data only: borders and cities from Natural Earth, relief from NOAA ETOPO 2022, capitals, languages, currencies and city population from Wikidata, country population and GDP from the World Bank, coats of arms from Wikimedia Commons, flags from flag-icons. The full list with licences is in the “Sources and licences” window on the home page.
